The Classic Pickup Truck and Its Place in American Culture
The pickup truck and Americans have a special affinity. This affinity can be
likened to the one that cowboys and horses had in the American Old West. Classic pickup
trucks tend to be a symbol of manliness in the United States. Pickup trucks
appear prominently in a lot of tough guy and neo-Western movie like Hud, Every
Which Way But Loose and Urban Cowboy. The classic truck is also a regular
fixture in American politics. For instance, Fred Thompson said in his famous
campaign speech that his opponent has one shortcoming: he hadn't spent enough
time in a pickup truck. In 2004, Ken Salazar, a Democratic Senate candidate,
rode in his green pickup when he campaigned. He subsequently won. President
George W. Bush has also been spotted riding a white Ford F-250 around his ranch
in Crawford, Texas.
"Texas Cadillac" is the term used to refer to a cowboy's pickup truck. It also
can refer to pickup trucks owned by people who are into the cowboy/country music
culture. Often, these Texas Cadillac's are very large pickups that have been
opulently customized. Many call Texas the "Land of Pickup Trucks." In fact, so
popular are pickup trucks in this state that pickup trucks have a much lower tax
on vehicle registration as opposed to registration of other types of vehicles. |
